Putting Technique to Work – A Choreography Workshop with Jeni

Sunday July 23rd 2017 11:00am – 12:30pm

Register for the Workshop Now!

Choreography works your brain, muscle memory and coordination while creatively giving you a perspective on ways to arrange movements to a piece of music using a range of technique and seamless transitions.

Put your technique to work in this fun and energizing workshop! From sharp & percussive to soft & fluid, we will drill basic technique with variations as well as turns, traveling steps and combinations. By the end of the workshop, you will be dancing a dynamic, short choreography to one of belly dance’s most beloved songs – “Alf Layla Wa Layla.”

About the Instructor:

Jennifer Daly (“Jeni”) spent several years in Los Angeles where she performed regularly at top nightclubs, exclusive private events and in numerous theatre shows, including “Belly Dance Evolution,” a groundbreaking production that tours the world. As a member of Jillina’s renowned International Dance Company, The Sahlala Dancers, Jeni had the privilege to train with one of the world’s most sought-after belly dance instructors and along-side some of the top dancers in the field. Between 2008 and 2010 she danced in segments for popular TV shows including ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” and Fox’s “Good Day L.A.” In addition to performing in various internationally distributed videos, Jeni also worked as a script supervisor on Jillina’s popular line of 2007 Belly Dance Instructional DVD’s. She is a certified Levels 1, 2 and Kids Hoopnotica Method Instructor and teaches regular dance classes & workshops in belly dance and hoop in MA, ME & NH.

Who is Nick and Nikki

Nick and Nikki

Yep…that’s me and Nikki taking a selfie. We are swing dance partners, and soon to be hubby and wife.

I (Nick) have been swing dancing for several years. I consider myself an advanced swing dancer who has mastered the Cup Cake aerial. You should check it out: The Cup Cake Aerial–that’s the final practice before the big show.

I taught swing classes for two years at UNH with the UNH Hepcats swing group. I have also performed multiple times on the stage in front of hundreds of people.

Almost every year I attend the Boston Swing Tea Party and learn from the best swing dancers across the world.

Nikki is a professional Belly Dancer. She has been teaching Belly Dance since her mid teens and is owner of Nya studio in Dover, NH. She has been swing dancing for several years, too, and is my dance partner. Nikki also performs multiple times per year and learns from the best swing dancers in the world.

Her strength is unique and cutesy flare moves to wow her partner and put on a good show. She’s got elegance; she’s got sass. You are going to like it.

She can also teach a box of rocks to make it into Harvard. Teaching is her gift, so if you are brand spankin’ new to swing dance, Nikki will have you grooving in no time.

Do I need to bring a partner?

No, you do not need to bring anyone. We get in a big circle to teach the lesson and rotate partners about every 2-5 minutes. If there is an odd person, Nikki or I (your instructors) will rotate into the mix. However, if you want to bring someone, please do.

What clothing and shoes should I wear?

Wear something comfort and somewhat loose. We’ve had people in past classes wear jeans, sweat pants, poofy dresses, yoga pants, and shorts. Anything really goes, but don’t show up in a suit or a tight number with high heels. Save that for the social dancing in Boston.

It’s not recommended to wear sneakers or tennis shoes. You want to wear a shoe that is somewhat slippery or worn. If all you got are sneakers, you can practice in your socks or bare feet.

Tantalizing Textures Workshop

This is Zabel’s SIGNATURE workshop and one of her best sellers! Belly dancers who are looking to improve their improvisation technique with fun and easy to remember tips will love this workshop. Many dancers struggle with trying to be “interesting” when they are on stage. They panic about picking moves to remember, and setting rough choreography just makes them more nervous. It’s difficult to remember everything you have learned in class when you are on the floor dancing in the moment. It is so easy to slip into doing one move over and over the same way!

You don’t need to panic! Take a deep breath, and think about all the wonderful sensory aspects around you when you dance. Use them as your inspiration. That is what Tantalizing Textures is all about.

Textures are not about speeding up a move or slowing it down. Textures are not about layering one move on top of another. Textures are the tactical essences we infuse our dance with to make each move more dynamic.

So dancers…. Lets shake things up, then melt it down!

This show is an artistic compilation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s poetry from his book “A Child’s Garden of Verses”. As a child the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson is fun and adventurous. As an artist his words bring to light the truth in what we miss when we grow up. As an adult, his stories transport us back to a world of limitless wonder. Zabel is honored to have the opportunity to present interpretations of his work through the art of Middle Eastern dance.

A selection of Stevenson’s poems from his book “A Child’s Garden of Poetry” have inspired a story which takes the audience through the trials and tribulations of growing up from a child’s view point. Professional Middle Eastern dance artists from all around New England are joining their talents to bring the words of Stevenson to life. Join us in the adventures of “A Child’s Garden of Verses”
